All about Holborn: your guide to the area
Originally called Holeburnstreete in 1249, the area takes its name from the Holebourne , a tributary of the River Fleet which is now underground. It is now better associated with the legal profession, housing the Inns of Court: Lincoln"s Inn, Gray"s Inn, Middle Temple and Inner Temple. Much of Holborn survived the Great Fire of London in 1666 and is now a popular business centre and tourist spot.If you love to sample the culture of London then you"ll love a trip to the British Museum nearby. It is the oldest and one of the biggest museums in the world and houses some incredible artefacts and priceless treasures. Alternatively, you can browse around Dr Johnson"s house which was the house where Dr Samuel Johnson worked for years in order to compile the first English Dictionary in 1755. There is also the Dickens House Museum at 48 Doughty Street, which was a prime location for the writer who lived there from April 1837 to December 1839.
If you"re on business at Holborn offices or looking to stay for a city break, the Waldorf Hilton is a premium hotel at the centre of London"s West End. Also, there is the Kingsway Hall which is close to both the British Museum and Theatreland.
