Cairo - A Paradise Of Pyramids And Pleasure

Although Cairo is jam-packed full of buildings of historic interest, most travelers journeying to this ancient city do not, in fact, go there with a view to exploring Cairo as their main goal. Itò€™s their entry point to visiting the last surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the Great Pyramids or, to be more precise, the Great Pyramid of Khufu which, together with the Sphinx, embody the absolute best of ancient Egypt.

You may have an image in your mind of solitary pyramids rising out of lonely desert sands. But, nowadays, nothing could be further from the truth, for the Pyramids and Sphinx are located on the Giza Plateau, some ten miles from the center of Cairo. However, over the years, the city has expanded tremendously, so that itò€™s now almost touching the Pyramids.

But the city of Cairo itself also has many fascinating things on offer. For example, any tour you do of the city must include a visit to the world-renowned Egyptian Museum, where youò€™ll discover thousands of yearsò€™ worth of civilization wonderfully preserved. The building is more than a century old and it houses over a hundred and thirty six thousand artifacts that span the countryò€™s history. This is the place where youò€™ll find several items from Tutankhamunò€™s tomb, including his gold mask and other fabulous jewelry. The Museum also houses the Royal Mummy Room where you can view the bodies of some of Ancient Egyptò€™s most famous leaders.

Near to Cairo are other wonderful attractions to visit ò€¦ the Ancient City of Memphis, the Necropolis of Abu Sir, the Dashur Pyramids, the Maidum Pyramid. Or, perhaps youò€™d prefer a break from sightseeing and would enjoy relaxing at Ain Soukhna - a fabulous beach resort on the Red Sea Riviera.

Donò€™t wear yourself out too much during the day for youò€™ll need plenty of energy at night as well! Cairo offers a vibrant and pulsating night life, and youò€™ll find plenty to please you, whether your taste is for modern music, more traditional shows, or perhaps dining out at a restaurant.

Remember also that the renowned River Nile runs through Cairo. Why not escape the hustle and bustle of the city and watch the setting sun go down aboard a felucca or former line cruiser, enjoying a tasty and peaceful Nile dinner cruise? These floating restaurants offer a unique and thoroughly romantic way to enjoy terrific food and excellent entertainment.

Cairo itself is a vast and varied city, successfully combining ancient and modern, with endless things to do and see. On top of that, nearby, it boasts one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Itò€™s also surrounded by numerous other places of interest for you to explore. Youò€™ll find so many things to do and see that the only drawback will be you might miss some of the best attractions the place has to offer.
