Teaching Volunteering In Africa - A Day In The Life
Volunteering in Africa also gives you a once in a lifetime chance to explore many exciting and challenging options for your leisure time. You can bungee jump off Victoria Falls. You can go white-water rafting down the Zambezi. You can go trekking across the bush on elephant or horse-back. Perhaps you would rather just lie on one of the Cape"s glorious sandy beaches? But back to the actual teaching volunteering. Let"s take a quick look at what you could be doing if you chose to volunteer in Zanzibar.
Breakfast is at about 8.00 am. In Zanzibar you will stay in beach-front accommodation so your breakfast is outside, overlooking the sea. Not a bad way to start the day!
From 8.30 you make lesson preparations. You might be involved in teaching English to local children, it might be craft activities like painting and drawing, it might be song and dance. There are always positions for qualified teachers to volunteer here but qualifications aren"t obligatory. If you have an interest in helping people to learn there is plenty for you to do.
From around 10.00 until 12.00 noon you"ll teach, or help teach, depending on your skills and the particular requirement that day. Volunteer organization staff work closely with you to ensure your time is spent in the most beneficial way possible.
From 12.00 until about 3.00 pm you have time to relax, eat, do a bit of exploring and catch some sun. Then it"s back to your morning placement or on to a different project. Mostly it"s helping to educate but sometimes there"s a more urgent need to update infrastructure so teaching volunteering can also include a bit of painting and decorating!
5.00pm and the volunteer working day is over. It"s time to return to your home on the beach. You"ll probably spend some time discussing the following day"s activities and then it"s up to you. Maybe you want to socialize, get a drink with your fellow teaching volunteers, or perhaps you would rather just have a doze on the sand and watch the African sun go down!
